Sloup-Šošůvka Caves

On the northern edge of Moravian Karst, beneath the villages of Sloup and Šošůvka, lie some of the most spectacular underground spaces in the Czech Republic.

They form one of the most extensive cave complexes of halls, passages, domes and underground abysses. Visitors can choose from several tour routes, and for the more adventurous, there is the "In Nagel's Footsteps" experience tour, which takes you down into the lower levels of the cave, normally off-limits to the public. If you've decided to spend a holiday in Moravian Karst, a visit to the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves is definitely worth it.

What will you see in Sloup-Šošůvka Caves?

Next to the picturesque karst village of Sloup, you'll find the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves, known among other things for the sinking of the Sloupský stream, which later "becomes" the underground Punkva river. Sloup is a popular destination for rock climbers who come to tackle the limestone crags of Hřebenáč, India and Europa. The formations known as Father, Mother and Son are landmarks of the entire complex.

The tour begins at the entrance portal, leading first into Nicová Cave, followed by the narrow, elongated passage of the beautiful Eliška's Cave, richly decorated with stalactites of every colour and type. It also has excellent acoustics, making it a venue for vocal and music concerts. Next comes an ascent into the most extensive part of the cave system – the Old Rocks – beginning with the Gothic Passage. This ends at the 65-metre-deep Stepped Abyss, which has been bridged to give visitors a completely unique perspective.

Further along, the great underground Nagel's Abyss awaits. It is accessible via two viewing bridges and measures approximately 90 metres from ceiling to the surface of the Sloupský stream below. The route continues through the Beam Passage, the Silver Passage and Kůlna Cave, where a large number of skeletal remains were found, including those of a cave bear. If you opt for the longer tour, you'll also visit the Šošůvka section with the fairy-tale Broušek Hall and the stalactite formation known as the Candlestick. The tour culminates with the Black Abyss, 70 metres deep down to the Sloupský stream.

You can combine your cave visit with a swim at the local outdoor pool. The caves are also very easily accessible from Hotel Skalní mlýn via the surfaced path through the canyon of Pustý Gorge, which is closed to motor traffic and ideal for a cycle trip or a walk.
