Macocha Abyss is an integral part of Punkva Caves and was formed by the gradual collapse of several levels of large cave chambers. The Punkva river flows along the bottom of the abyss.
At 138.4 m deep, Macocha is the largest abyss of its type in Central Europe
Its depth is 138.4 metres down to the surface of the Lower Lake, and the depth continues to a currently known maximum of 187.5 m. Its beauty and breathtaking scenery can be admired either from the bottom of the abyss on the Punkva Caves tour, or from two viewing bridges.
The floor plan dimensions of Macocha Abyss are 174 × 76 metres. The Upper Bridge was built in 1882 and, being at the highest point, gives you a panoramic view of the entire abyss. Admission to the upper bridge is free and it is accessible. Wheelchair users and families with pushchairs can enjoy the beauty of Macocha too. Near the upper bridge there is a large (paid) car park and several refreshment and souvenir stalls. Right next to the upper bridge is the Macocha Chalet complex, a popular stop for visitors who enjoy its distinctive atmosphere, home-cooked food and the overall romantic ambience of this unique setting.
The Lower Bridge was built by the Czech Tourist Club in 1899 and is located at a height of 92 metres above the lower part of the abyss. Admission is free, but the path involves many steps, making it unsuitable for wheelchair users or families with pushchairs.
