Visit the Caves of Moravian Karst
You won't find a more famous karst region in the Czech Republic than Moravian Karst. In its caves, you can discover unique natural wonders of both the living and non-living world, alongside archaeological and palaeontological heritage sites.
More than 1,100 caves have been discovered in Moravian Karst, five of which are open to the public. Opening hours for the caves of Moravian Karst can be found at: https://www.caves.cz/. Punkva Caves, Sloup-Šošůvka Caves and Výpustek Cave are open year-round.
Multicoloured stalactites at Balcarka Cave
Balcarka Cave, located near Ostrov u Macochy, is known for its multicoloured stalactites and narrow cave passages that make you feel like a true explorer. This cave was the first in Eastern Europe to illuminate its Great Dome with LED lighting, creating stunning light effects.
Výpustek Cave – a former aircraft engine factory
Výpustek Cave can be found near the small town of Křtiny. From 1938 it was used by the Czechoslovak army as a munitions depot. To adapt it for this purpose, many cave chambers and rock partitions were blasted away, stripping the cave of its natural beauty. The resulting tunnel spaces were later occupied by the German army during the Second World War, who set up an underground aircraft engine factory here. Since 2008, the cave has been open to visitors.
Stalactites and stalagmites at Catherine's Cave
Close to Hotel Skalní mlýn lies Catherine's Cave. Its name comes from a legend about a shepherdess named Kateřinka who went into the cave searching for a lost lamb – and never found her way out again. Right at the start of the tour, you'll be amazed by one of the most beautiful sights in all of Moravian Karst. Dozens of long, slender stalactites and stalagmites form the so-called "Bamboo Grove". You can also admire natural formations named "The Pheasant", "Two Owls", and "Kateřinka's Flock". Near the exit, the colourfully lit formation known as "The Witch" awaits you.
Speleo experience at Punkva Caves and Macocha Abyss
Punkva Caves are the most famous and most visited caves in the Czech Republic. You really shouldn't miss Macocha Abyss and the boat ride along the underground Punkva river if you're planning a visit to the caves of Moravian Karst. You can reach the cave from Skalní mlýn on foot or by tourist train. Macocha Abyss is accessible by gondola cable car or along the Macocha nature trail.
The magnificent Sloup-Šošůvka Caves
Sloup-Šošůvka Caves are among the most spectacular underground spaces in the Czech Republic. The cave system consists of a complex of halls, passages, domes and underground abysses. For the adventurous, there is the "In Nagel's Footsteps" experience tour, which takes you into parts of the cave not normally accessible to visitors.
